Celebrations across the cultures

SCHOOL has marked Christmas and the Islamic New Year with a crosscultural celebration.
Christian pupils at Bowburn Junior School, in Bowburn, near Durham, sang Silent Night, while Muslim youngsters sang a song about the months of the year, written by Yusuf Islam. Then they performed together.
The celebration took place on Friday, on the last day of the school term, which was also Islamic New Year.
Headteacher Lynne Lyons said: "We've had lots of the usual celebrations for Christmas, but we have ten Muslim children in the school and we really wanted them to feel included, so I decided that because it was Islamic New Year, it would be nice if they sang too."
